Midjourney Founder David Holz On The Impact Of AI On Art, Imagination And The Creative Economy

#artificialintelligence

Midjourney is one of the leading drivers of the emerging technology of using artificial intelligence (AI) to create visual imagery from text prompts. The San Francisco-based startup recently made news as the engine behind the artwork that won an award in a Colorado state fair competition, and that's unlikely to be the last complicated issue that AI art will face in the coming years. Midjourney differentiates from others in the space by emphasizing the painterly aesthetics in the images it produces. The platform is not trying to create photorealistic images that can be mistaken for photographs, and CEO David Holz says he is personally very uneasy with the uncanny quality of deepfakes and other work that simulates reality too closely. Instead, Holz says Midjourney is designed to unlock the creativity of ordinary people by giving them tools to make beautiful pictures just by describing them.

Ai-Da the robot sums up the flawed logic of Lords debate on AI

#artificialintelligence

When it announced that "the world's first robot artist" would be giving evidence to a parliamentary committee, the House of Lords probably hoped to shake off its sleepy reputation. Unfortunately, when the Ai-Da robot arrived at the Palace of Westminster on Tuesday, the opposite seemed to occur. Apparently overcome by the stuffy atmosphere, the machine, which resembles a sex doll strapped to a pair of egg whisks, shut down halfway through the evidence session. As its creator, Aidan Meller, scrabbled with power sockets to restart the device, he put a pair of sunglasses on the machine. "When we reset her, she can sometimes pull quite interesting faces," he explained.

All the same, it's one thing employers love to hate. Whenever an employer hires a worker, the understanding is that they have offered a fair wage for what you have to offer. Therefore, any time spent outside work should be for recuperating (recreation and sleep) from the busy day. That has been the thinking: "Eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest." It might have worked in the early 20th century, during the industrial revolution, but a rethink for the demands of the 21st century is long due.

How do emerging technologies affect the creative economy?

#artificialintelligence

Research suggests some ways artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, and blockchain are reshaping creative work. New technologies are reshaping the way we live and work, and their effects naturally touch the creative economy--art, journalism, music, and more. As artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality, virtual reality (VR), and blockchain continue to emerge as powerful forces, could they be used to greater benefit? Our paper, Creative Disruption: The impact of emerging technologies on the creative economy, presents the findings of a joint project, conducted by McKinsey & Company and the World Economic Forum, which studied the impact of these technologies on the creative economy. The project team conducted more than 50 interviews with experts from Asia, Europe, and North America, as well as three workshops in China and the United States with World Economic Forum constituents.

What is a smart kid in the age of the smart machine?

This kind of question has been on IQ tests for years and the answer, it turns out, depends a good deal on which era you live in. Back in the down-home, cotton-spinning, 19th century you'd be right in thinking you use dogs to hunt rabbits. Shift forward to the glass-fronted skyscrapers of the 20th century Information Age and there was a new right answer; they are both mammals. But, as humans leapfrog into the 21st century of Artificial Intelligence (AI), robots and machine learning, is there an even newer answer? And if so, what is it?
